“Every pro was once an amateur. Every expert was once a beginner. So dream big and start now” (unknown)

This past Sunday, we welcomed our freshman to a socially distanced (isn’t that now the norm, do I still have to say this?) orientation and ice breaker event on the Hebrew Academy High School patio. The event kicked off with our new principal, Dr. Eliezer Jones talking to the students about our theme of the year. Our theme is standing up for yourself, standing up for others, and standing up now. He spoke about the importance of high school and the bright futures of our students. Next, after giving students their hard copy schedules, I explained the concept behind the block schedule, as well as the opportunities that high school can offer them. It was imperative that they understood that Dr Jones and I would be there to help them navigate through this process. I reinforced to them that this is certainly not the way we planned to open school, but nonetheless this is something that they will always remember and look back as a challenge that they overcame.

Next, our staff was introduced and welcomed them to our school. They told the students which courses they would be teaching so that they could put a face to a name. The feeling of excitement was palpable; both the staff and the students were so eager to begin this high school journey. It honestly felt so exciting to watch. We had an ice breaker event to help the students get to know each other and many participated in an art project to inspire a conversation about Jewish identity.

The event concluded with students picking up their books and lab kits (yes, they have an at-home lab assignment to do next week, so please be sure to put the kits in your refrigerator) and once again confirming their schedule and classes. As we said goodbye, each student was  given a gourmet Krispy Kreme breakfast. We felt that supplying a breakfast of champions (donuts) to the students was appropriate since we consider our students to be champions!  It was a great event and we would like to thank Mrs. Oshrat Twito for helping make it so special. Shabbat Shalom and thank you for making the effort to have your children there on Sunday.
