We were beyond honored to host Chaim Galbut yesterday, the Miami-born, 6’7″ forward who just made history by signing with Duquesne University as one of the only Orthodox Jews to ever commit to a Division I program. What makes his story extraordinary: Duquesne signed him knowing he won’t play on Shabbat. The visit hit even closer to home because Chaim’s father won a championship for Hebrew Academy right here in 1995. Chaim sat with our upper school students in the Beit Midrash, then headed to the gym where he showed off the dunks that broke the internet and challenged a few brave students and teachers along the way. We presented him with a special trophy to honor not just his athletic achievements, but his pride as an Orthodox Jew who refused to choose between his faith and his dreams. Watch out, college basketball. Mazal tov, Chaim…you’re an inspiration! Categories (tags): AthleticsMiddle School
