Dear Warrior Parents, Alumni, and Friends,
What an exciting start to the year we have already had in athletics! We started the year with our Varsity Boys Flag Football team making the Independent Athletic League (IAL) Playoffs for the second year in a row. We had a record year in Cross Country as one individual and our entire Varsity Girls team qualified for Regionals for the first time ever and our 4th Grade Flag Football team went undefeated and captured the Jewish Athletic League (JAL) Championship this week for the first time ever! Even though we are not even halfway through the year, these accomplishments have shown that the Warriors are a force to be reckoned with.
Our Varsity Boys Flag Football team, in only their second season, went undefeated in the regular season and qualified for the IAL playoffs for the second time in as many years. The IAL is made up of 12 teams across South Florida, where only the top four make the playoffs. The Warriors are coached by Rob Erickson and continue to get better and better with each game. They fell short in the semifinals against Katz Yeshiva but had no seniors. The expectations are high for the Warriors next year as they look to capture the school’s first ever IAL Championship.
Another great season for our Cross-Country program as Akiva Itzkowitz and our entire Varsity Girls team qualified for FHSAA Regionals for the first time in school history. The top 15 individual runners qualify and top 3 girl’s teams at districts. Akiva finished the District meet with a time of 20:56 (13th overall) and finished the Regional meet in a time of 20:26 (Personal Record). His time of 20:26 was good for 32nd overall out of over 100 High School boys and he will look to get top 15 next year to advance to the State meet. Sydney Lugo led the way for our girls at the Regional meet with a time of 28:54 and Abigail Gottlieb followed shortly after with a time of 28:57. Abigail set a new Personal Record (PR) again this season and will look to get that time lower and lower in the coming years.
Our 4th Grade Boys Flag Football team just completed a perfect season and won the 4th Grade JAL Championship for the first time ever! They defeated Hillel 14-0 in the Championship game to capture the title in front of the home crowd. The 5th Grade team won the title back in 2011 and the Elementary Girls Basketball team won it in 2016, so this marks the third overall JAL Championship. The 4th Grade Warriors only allowed 24 points the entire season and scored over 100! The 4th Grade Warriors will look to capture the crown again next year when they move into the 5th Grade league.
These accomplishments are extremely special to our school and have had such a positive influence on our Athletic Program. Giving our school local exposure from athletics is something we should all be very proud of. The future is bright in Warrior athletics!
