Dear Warrior Parents, Alumni, and Friends,
What an exciting month we have had in athletics! A few weekends back, we finished hosting the largest Girls Basketball Shabbaton in the United States. This past weekend, our Varsity Boys Basketball team finished 5th overall at the 2018 Red Sarachek Basketball Tournament in New York. Both of our Elementary Basketball teams won the JAL Championship making it the first ever title for the 4th Grade Boys and the second overall title for the Elementary Girls. These accomplishments are incredible and thanks to all the time and effort put in by all our players and coaches.
A few weekends back we hosted the largest Varsity Girls Basketball Shabbaton in the United States. We had 11 teams from across the country including California, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Georgia, New York, and Tennessee. The games started Wednesday night and concluded Sunday morning at 2 AM. The Championship game consisted of #2 seed Katz Yeshiva High School (Boca Raton) vs. #4 seed Ida Crown (Chicago) with Katz coming out with the 60-41 victory to take the Championship. This was the 13th year we have hosted the Shabbaton and every year is better and better. The weather was beautiful the entire time and we look forward to an even better 2019 Shabbaton!
This past week our Varsity Boys Basketball team headed to New York for the 2018 Red Sarachek Tournament and finished in 5th place overall out of 20 teams. The #7 seed Warriors defeated #10 seed Ida Crown 63-51 to advance to play #2 seed Valley Torah in the Quarterfinals. The Warriors put forth a valiant effort against Valley Torah but unfortunately fell short 51-42 to be sent to the Tier 1 consolation games. The Warriors then defeated Frisch 71-52 and DRS 66-58 to secure 5th place overall in the 20-team tournament. The Warriors played their best Basketball of the season during the 4 games stretch and will look to get better and better next year!
Both our 4th Grade Boys Basketball team and our Elementary Girls Basketball team captured the JAL Championship in the same season for the first time in school history. Our 4th Grade boys Basketball Warriors defeated Hillel 31-14 for their first JAL Championship in school history while our Elementary Girls Basketball team defeated Hillel 19-6 to capture their 2nd JAL Championship. Both teams went undefeated in the regular season and got better and better with each game played. A “2018” will be added to the banner that already exists on the gymnasium walls to commemorate both amazing accomplishments.
All these accomplishments are extremely special to our school and have had such a positive influence on our Athletic Program. Giving our school national exposure from athletics is something we should all be very proud of. Bringing three Championships in one year back to Hebrew Academy is quite a feat! It really is great to be called a Warrior!
