Grade 5 Science: Conductors and Insulators

This week in grade 5 science students were able to continue our work with electric currents. Students are asked to guess what materials might make the safest gloves for handling electricity. Then they make observations of materials that are either conductors or insulators of electricity. They observe patterns to construct explanations about how well different types of materials act as conductors or insulators. In doing so, they develop the crosscutting concept of Patterns. The big idea of this lesson is that the students experimented to see if some materials transfer electrical energy more easily than others. Students worked in groups for their investigations.
