Fourth Grade Kicks Off Novel Engineering Unit

This week fourth grade students kicked off their Novel Engineering Unit! Novel Engineering is an innovative program that integrates literacy and engineering. The novel, in this case Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume, is used as a springboard for students to discover problems and then design solutions using the engineering design process. In just one chapter of the book students have already come up with six problems they could try to solve! Students were able to get a taste of one of Peter’s problems in the book: having too much Juicy-O. After reading the first chapter, students sampled Juicy-O, a blend of banana, orange, pineapple, grapefruit, and pear juice. The reviews were mostly positive. Fourth grade is looking forward to finding more problems and then engineering solutions!
