The Delicious Home Cafe Opened its Doors Thursday and it  was a Resounding Success!

The Hebrew Academy’s Annual Second Grade Restaurant takes place in June as a final project based learning experience for all of the math the children learn along with all the many different skills involved to help organize a restaurant. This restaurant teaches the students how math works in the real world and takes their classroom learning and turns into a real-life experience.

Not wanting the students to miss out on this experience, Second Grade teacher, Tammy Goldring, along with her co-teacher, Noa Shabat, worked on making it happen through Zoom. Students worked together with their teachers to learn how to run the restaurant and become a chef, server, and cashier.

The name of the restaurant  was chosen by a student majority vote. Students designed their own menus and then made homemade pizza dough and s’mores together with their teachers on Zoom. Students were able to choose different entrees, desserts, and drinks to serve.

When the meals were prepared the students were ready to share their delicious delights with their customers. Faculty from the elementary school visited students outside their homes for take-out meal service.

The money, as in the past, was donated to the Kosher Food Bank. In this way, along with having this very interactive educational experience, students were able to make a meaningful contribution to the Kosher Food Bank and learn the importance of giving tzedakah and doing a chesed. Of course, they were allowed to keep their well deserved tips! After all, they really earned it!

Thank you to all of the students, their families, the customers, and of course, the teachers who made this yearly second grade event epic!
